Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Recruits.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the number of recruits to the Army in each of the last three years and the present strength of the Army.

The total number of recruits accepted in the Permanent Defence Force during each of the last three years was 4,494 in 1952, 2,326 in 1953 and 1,578 in 1954.

The total strength of the Defence Forces on the latest date for which audited figures are available, i.e. the 28th February, 1955, was 33,386, made up as follows:—
