Vol. 149 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Relief of Galway Congestion.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission propose to allot the Blake estate, Clooncun, Glenamaddy, County Galway, for the relief of local congestion, and, if so, when.

A scheme for the rearrangement and enlargement of holdings at Clooncun West has been prepared and it is hoped, with the cooperation of the tenants, to operate it within the next few weeks.

Is the Minister aware that in this, which is one of the most congested areas in North Galway, the Land Commission recently sanctioned the sale of an unvested holding, owned then by Mr. Larry Cunniffe, to a big businessman in Glenamaddy and that, as I understand, they are now about to facilitate this businessman again by rearranging further and giving him a holding owned by Mr. Dan Hurley?

What is biting the Deputy?

The Land Commission are about to rearrange this townland. I have not particulars of the case the Deputy has in mind, but the position there is that they propose to rearrange 15 holdings and enlarge seven other holdings and for that they are utilising four resumed holdings and two migrants' holdings. The Land Commission are satisfied that they are bringing all the people in that particular area up to a reasonable standard of valuation.

Will the Minister inquire into and let me know why the Land Commission sanctioned the sale of an unvested holding to a shopkeeper? Was it through a wangle on the part of the Parliamentary Secretary on behalf of his cousin—the cousin again?

The Parliamentary Secretary has to his credit what the Deputy has not.
