Vol. 149 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - American Coal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the price charged by Fuel Importers, Limited, for American coal stored in the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply to a similar question on 16th February, 1955. The price charged by Fuel Importers, Limited, is £5 11s. a ton ex-site to importing coal merchants.

Would the Minister not think, in view of the fact that £9 per ton is charged for this coal in Galway, that it is a question that should be looked into by his Department?

That seems to be a separate question.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the amount of American coal at present stored in the Phoenix Park, Dublin, and the loss incurred by the Exchequer on this coal to date.

The quantity of American coal remaining in stock in Phoenix Park, Dublin, amounted to 140,000 tons approximately at a recent date. The trading loss to date on sales of American coal purchased in 1951-52 is £320,000 approximately.
