Vol. 151 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - P.A.Y.E. System.

asked the Minister for Finance the approximate expenditure involved in the establishment of a system of P.A.Y.E. in respect of incometax.

The establishment of a system of P.A.Y.E., as the Deputy will appreciate, would involve expenditure on the part of employers as well as on the part of the State, but it is assumed that the question relates only to expenditure of the latter class. While, owing to the many factors likely to be involved, it is not possible to say with any certainty what the actual figures would be, it is estimated that the cost to the Exchequer of the establishment of a system of P.A.Y.E. for income-tax payable under Schedule E would be £160,000 for the year of introduction and that after a few years the annual cost would diminish to some £100,000.
