Vol. 153 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Operations of French Fishermen.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware (a) that on Tuesday, 11th October, 1955, two Dingle fishing boats, while operating off the Blasket Islands, were driven away at the point of a gun by French fishermen when their crews protested that they were in danger of having their nets cut by the Frenchmen, and (b) that the Dingle fishermen are now afraid to shoot their nets because of the manner in which French fishermen have been damaging their gear recently; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

I am aware of the allegations referred to in the question. Inquiries are being made into them, and I am not at present in a position to say what further action may be taken.
