Vol. 153 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - British Royal Coat of Arms

asked the Minister for Justice whether in the exhibition of a copy of Section 1 of the Innkeepers' Liability Act, 1863, as required by Section 3 of that Act, innkeepers are also required to surmount the copy of the section with a copy of the British royal coat of arms, and, if so, if he will take such steps as are necessary to abolish the latter requirement.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative, and, therefore, the second part does not arise.

In view of the fact that visitors to our shores are perplexed when they see such an insignia in Irish hotels, will the Minister take any steps to have these notices removed?

It is optional for the hotel keeper to display any class of photograph he likes.

Could the Minister say who prints these notices? Are they supplied by a Government office?

No. There is no such thing as a notice printed at the present time.

I understand that it is a statutory obligation to have such a notice displayed in a prominent place in hotels.

It is not necessary to have any coat of arms displayed on the notices which may be required under the Act.

I suggest to the Minister that the Irish coat of arms should be displayed.

It is not my function to prevent any hotel keeper from displaying any particular emblem he wishes to display.
