Vol. 153 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unsold Herring Catches.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that herring catches landed recently at Downings, County Donegal, were left unsold, and, if so, if he will make a statement in the matter.

Mr. Flanagan

I am aware that, of a landing of about 20 cran of herring made at Downings recently, five cran failed to sell on the fresh market and were salted in barrels by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara on behalf of the fishermen for disposal later as opportunity offers.

Am I to take it from the reply given by the Parliamentary Secretary that if the landing was not sold something just as good was done with it? What I asked the Parliamentary Secretary was whether the herrings were sold or not.

Mr. Flanagan

I have answered the question. If the Deputy puts down a further question, I will give him any further information that my Department has got.

The question clearly asked whether the herrings were sold or not. I suggest that the Parliamentary Secretary should get down to this matter himself, and after a little while spent in pickle he might know more about it.

Mr. Flanagan

I would probably remain a little longer than the Deputy if we were in salt.
