NOTE.—The Social Insurance Fund was established on the 5th January, 1953 on which date it replaced the former National Health Insurance Fund, the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Fund and the Unemployment Fund. The figures given in the reply are the aggregate amounts for the three former funds.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the amount paid out of the Social Insurance Fund in respect of (a) unemployment benefit, (b) sickness benefit, and (c) widows' and orphans' pensions in each of the financial years 1950-51 to 1955-56.

Prior to 5th January, 1953, unemployment benefit was paid out of the Unemployment Fund, sickness benefit and disablement benefit out of the National Health Insurance Fund and widows' and orphans' pensions, both contributory and non-contributory, out of the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Fund. On the 5th January, 1953, these three funds were merged in the Social Insurance Fund. From the same date sickness benefit and disablement benefit were replaced by one new benefit described as disability benefit, and widows' and orphans' non-contributory pensions ceased to be a fund charge and became a direct charge on voted moneys.

Table I hereunder shows the amounts of the foregoing benefits which were paid out of Insurance Funds in the years mentioned in the question and Table II shows the amounts of widows' and orphans' non-contributory pensions which were paid out of voted moneys since 5th January, 1953.
