Vol. 157 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin School Site.

asked the Minister for Education when the site for the new school at Brittas, County Dublin, was offered to his Department, when it was inspected, and when approval was given; further, when the school will be built.

The site on which it is proposed to erect a new national school at Brittas, County Dublin, was offered by the reverend manager in June, 1953. The Commissioners of Public Works reported in February, 1954, that they had carried out an inspection of the plot, and that it was suitable for the purposes of the new school.

A grant towards the cost of the erection of the new school was sanctioned by my Department in April, 1955. The Commissioners of Public Works have prepared the working drawings and specification for the scheme and I understand that they hope soon to be in a position to invite tenders.

Does the Minister think it is a reasonable speed at which to proceed with the building of a school when three years elapse before even a sod is turned? It is three years since the building of this school was first planned, and we have gone no further than getting another promise.

I was particularly and personally concerned with some of the arrangements necessary in order to see that a suitable and adequate site was provided for the school, and I consider that, in all the circumstances of the case, there has been no undue delay of any kind. At the present moment the commissioners are in correspondence with the manager with regard to certain matters that have yet to be decided before things can go ahead.
