Vol. 157 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Deputation of Taxi-men.

asked the Minister for Finance why he refused to meet a deputation of representatives of taxi-men to discuss their problems arising out of the recent Budget.

I have already intimated to taxi-men's representatives who sought interviews with me to discuss abatement of the duty imposed on petrol in the recent Budget, that having regard to the principle I followed in the Budget of taxing less essential forms of expenditure, particularly imports, no useful purpose would be served by such interviews.

Would the Minister change his mind on the matter and see them?

I do not think I have anything to add. I have already told them I would consider any written representations they might care to make.

They have not heard that.

I beg your pardon?

I do not think those who came to see me were aware of that.

It depends on behalf of which body the Deputy is speaking, if there are two.

The Minister is supposed to be impartial.

The party that sought to make representations.
