Vol. 160 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Barley Imports.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the quantity of barley imported in the 12 months ended 31st October, 1956, the countries of origin, and the total cost.

Imports of barley other than for seed in the 12 months ended 31st October, 1956, amounted to 528,348 cwt.: of this 528,268 cwt. originated in the United States of America and 80 cwt. in Britain. Imports of seed barley in the same period amounted to 100,868 cwt. comprising 63,140 cwt. from Denmark, 37,023 cwt. from Britain and 705 cwt. from Sweden. The total cost (c.i.f.) of all these imports was £804,740.

I put down the question because I am informed by the Wexford farmers that if they could get a contract from the maltsters they would produce all the barley the country wants and there would be no need for this importation.

That is a well-known fact.

I think this is mostly feeding barley.

Malting barley.

No. This is mostly feeding barley.
