Vol. 161 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building and Reconstruction of Hospitals and Nursing Institutions.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the number of new or old hospitals, sanatoria, nurses' homes or other institutions on which building or reconstruction work was commenced or for which approval was given and moneys allocated between 1948 and 1951, which did not have the full prior approval and consent of the local authority and voluntary organisation concerned and of their medical, nursing and other advisers.

In general it may be accepted that projects which were proceeded with between 1948 and 1951 had involved considerable prior discussion and examination of details in conjunction with the promoters. It was not unusual for the Department to recommend changes in planning of schemes to secure economies or more efficient functioning and in the main such changes were accepted. There is no information available in my Department as to whether the ultimate decision in the case of each project had the full prior approval and consent of the different groups mentioned in the Deputy's question.
