Vol. 161 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - District Justice's Qualifications

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the qualifications, including experience, required for appointment as district justice, and if he will further state in detail the basis on which a district justice (name supplied) was considered to have satisfied these requirements.

The person referred to by the Deputy possessed, at the date of his appointment as a Justice of the District Court, the qualifications prescribed by the Courts of Justice Act, 1924, as amended by the Courts of Justice Act, 1953.

Does the Minister believe that the qualification of six years as editor of the Irish Press was sufficient qualification to appoint this man as a district justice, without his having had practical experience over that time at the Bar?

I am satisfied that his qualifications met all the necessary requirements.

The fact that he was working in the Irish Press was sufficient qualification.
