Vol. 162 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Loaf from Irish Wheat.

asked the Minister for Agriculture (a) whether he has seen a report that it has now been proved that a completely satisfactory loaf can be produced from Irish wheat, (b) if he will take immediate steps, in collaboration with the Minister for Industry and Commerce, to have all flour millers and bakeries instructed in the method of producing this loaf so that they can at the earliest possible moment dispense with the importation of foreign wheat, and (c) if he will take immediate steps to have grown in this country next season sufficient wheat to supply all our needs.

Mr. Moylan

I have seen the Press report referred to which indicated that a pan loaf had been backed by research workers at the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards from flour made from Irish wheat. The result of this experiment is not, however, sufficient to warrant an immediate change to the production of flour made entirely from Irish wheat and, as indicated in the report referred to, the institute is arranging to carry out further experiments in this regard.
