Vol. 164 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Barley.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will now make a statement on the minimum price that might be expected for barley of the 1958 crop.

I am not yet in a position to make a statement in this matter.

Can the Minister give any indication when the Government will be in a position to make a statement in regard to this matter in view of the fact that they are on record, through previous occupants of the Minister's present post, as saying that they consider it to be a public scandal that this information should be withheld beyond the month of October?

It is always important to make that announcement as early as possible but I dislike committing myself to a date, fearing I might not be as good as my word.

I have the greatest sympathy with the Minister's delicacy in this matter but could he give us any indication of when he thinks it likely that he will be in a position to give this information?

I do not like to make prophecies or indulge in that kind of undertaking either. I have given the House the assurance that I will make this announcement as soon as I can.
