Vol. 165 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Report of Milk Costings Commission.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what is the present position in regard to the report of the Milk Costings Commission; and if he will make a full statement on the matter.

The chairman of the Committee on Milk Production Costs resigned on the 11th December, 1957, and I had an interview the following day with the other members at their request. They suggested to me that a new chairman from outside the committee should be appointed, but I was unable to agree with this suggestion, for the reason that it would prolong for an undue further period the committee's already lengthy proceedings. As it was the view of the members of the committee that it would be impracticable to have a chairman appointed from within the committee's membership, I wrote to the members on 20th December, 1957, asking them to furnish me by 1st March, 1958, with their comments, either individually or otherwise, on the revised report of the technical director which, I understood, had been furnished to them shortly before.

Would the Minister not think it advisable to abolish this commission? Everyone knows it is a farce which has cost a good deal of public money over the last five years.

I am unable to arrive at any conclusion as to what the Deputy thinks I am aiming at from the supplementary question he has put to me.

That is not what you said 12 months ago.

What did I say?

Every one of you was bawling about milk 12 months ago.

What did I say?
