Vol. 173 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Social Welfare Agent.

21.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the reasons for the discontinuance of the post of local agent for sickness insurance benefit in Wexford town.

The post of local agent at Wexford has not been discontinued. On the occurrence of a vacancy in the post recently, it was decided to administer the agency from headquarters as a temporary arrangement.

So this is only a temporary arrangement?

A temporary arrangement.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say when it is expected a new appointment will be made and how long this system will continue?

This means a lot of inconvenience to insured persons in Wexford.

I am well aware that the system is working far better than the old system—the temporary arrangement.

Why not make it a permanent feature, so?

The whole question is under consideration. We do not want agents as glorified postmen drawing salaries and doing nothing else.

That is a serious allegation. Can the Parliamentary Secretary not say to whom inquiries can now be made with regard to sickness insurance benefit in Wexford town?

That is a separate question which can be put down by the Deputy.

That is a new one.
