Vol. 178 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Enfield Bridge.

45.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the great delay in the repairing of the dangerous bridge at Enfield, County Meath; and, if so, whether the Meath County Council, Córas Iompair Éireann or his Department is responsible for holding up the work; and if in view of the many deaths caused by this bridge in recent years, he will take steps to have the work completed without further delay.

I am aware that the preliminaries to the improvement of this bridge have taken a considerable time, but that there have also been exceptional difficulties, such as those met by the County Council with regard to land acquisition, the problem of providing reasonable facilities for traffic during the reconstruction of the bridge and the completion of the necessary agreement with Córas Iompair Éireann. I understand that the council hope to invite tenders for the work in the near future.

My Department has not been responsible for any delay in this matter.
