Vol. 178 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Titles of Nobility and Other Honours.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he will indicate to the Government of the Six Counties that, as further evidence of goodwill, the Government, on the reunification of Ireland, will place no restriction on the acceptance by citizens of the Six Counties of titles of nobility or other honours from other countries.

The answer is in the negative.

I have no evidence that fear of any such restriction affects the attitude of any Six-County residents towards the reunification of Ireland.

Is the Taoiseach aware that the Act of Union was passed largely by means of titles and that the conquest of this country was due largely to a matter of titles which pleased, maybe, certain Irish chiefs? That may be one of the underlying reasons for the division between the North and the South. All men are vain. The Taoiseach should know the extent to which men will go to become Teachtaí Dála and Senators.

The Deputy must put a question.

I asked if the Taoiseach was aware of certain facts. If he is not so aware, I am telling him. It may be one of the many reasons why there is a negative answer to the offer to reunify the country. The Taoiseach will have to answer the question sometime, as well as many other questions. People like to be lords and ladies, especially up there.
