Vol. 178 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Members' Allowances.

23.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is intended to introduce a Bill dealing with Members' Allowances this Session; and if it is intended that any increase will be retrospective to January, 1959.

The answer to the first part part of the question is in the negative; the second part does not, therefore, arise.

Is the Minister aware that not more than 20 per cent. object to increasing the allowances, that that is largely due to a snobbish mentality and a desire to leave the people who have little means worse off, so that they may find themselves out of the House, thus giving the others full possession of the Carlton Club here? That is the real reason.
