Vol. 178 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Barley Exports.

7.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total quantity of barley exported during September and October of this year.

8.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total quantity of Irish barley exported during August, September and October of this year the price received for it, the names of the exporters, the total quantity of maize imported under the Maize Barley Agreement or the guarantee given, the names of the importers and the quantity allotted to each importer.

I propose, with the permission of the Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to take questions No. 7 and No. 8 together and to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the quantity, value and average f.o.b. price of barley exported in each of the months August, September and October, 1959. It is not the practice of the Central Statistics Office to reveal the names of individual importers or exporters.

The arrangement made with the four Associations engaged in the grain and feeding stuffs trades, is that licences for the import of coarse grains (other than oats) will be granted against barley exported on a ton for ton basis only and that the quantity of maize to be imported will not exceed 40,000 tons during the cereal year.

Licences for the importation of maize against barley exports, under this arrangement, were not granted during the months August to October. Accordingly, no maize was imported during these months under the arrangement.

Following is the statement:—

Is the Taoiseach satisfied that these exports of oats and barley will not result in a shortage of both oats and barley for feeding stuff purposes?

That seems to be a separate question.
