Vol. 181 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Numbers on Live Register.

9.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number on the live register (a) in January, 1957 and (b) in January, 1960; and what would be the figure for (b) if the terms of the Social Welfare (Amendment) Act, 1958 (whereby the upper income limit for compulsory insurance of non-manual workers was raised from £600 to £800) were not taken into consideration.

The numbers on the Live Register for the last Saturday in January, 1957, and the last Saturday in January, 1960, were 94,648 and 74,350 respectively. It is not possible to give for January, 1960 a figure adjusted so as to exclude persons affected by the Social Welfare (Amendment) Act, 1958, but as they would generally be in the more sheltered types of employment, the number unemployed would probably be negligible.
