asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of the Garda Síochána for the years 1930, 1940, 1950 and 1960 (1) the number of stations in use, (2) the total strength of the Garda, divided as between (a) gardaí, (b) sergeants, (c) inspectors, (d) superintendents, (e) chief superintendents, and (f) commissioners and (3) the total expenditure.

The answer is in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Strength of the various ranks of the Garda Síochána and total number of Garda stations in use on 1st April of the years 1930, 1940, 1950 and 1960 are as follows:—

The expenditure from the Garda Síochána Vote for each of the financial years 1930-31, 1940-41, 1950-51 and the estimated expenditure for 1960-61 is as follows:—

(Estimate)

The estimated figure of £5,275,610 for 1960-61 contains a provision of £1,183,911 for Garda pensions, gratuities etc., to be paid in the year. Prior to the year 1954-55 the provision to meet such expenditure was borne on the Vote for Superannuation and Retired Allowances.
