Vol. 182 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Growing on Quota Basis.

12.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he has received representatives of the Flour Millers' Association for discussions on the growing of wheat on a quota basis; and what assurance he has given them.

13.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he has come to any decision on the scheme proposed by the General Council of Committees of Agriculture and the flour millers for the growing of wheat on a quota basis; if in view of the fact that the proposed scheme has been rejected by many extensive wheat growers and organisations representative of the farmers as unsuitable and undesirable he will make a statement on the matter and convey his decision; and, if not, when he proposes to give a decision in view of the great urgency and importance of this matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take questions Nos. 12 and 13 together. Discussions have taken place with representatives of the Flour Millers' Association and the General Council of County Committees of Agriculture on the proposals submitted jointly by these bodies for the growing of wheat on a quota basis. It has however been made known since 4th December last that a contract system could not be introduced this year and that a contract system could not be implemented without legislation.
