Vol. 185 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Raw Sugar Imports.

37.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total amount of raw sugar which will need to be imported during the coming year and the total estimated cost of such imports; and whether he is satisfied that the raw sugar needed will be purchased for the lowest price and on the most favourable terms available, irrespective of country of origin.

I understand from Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann Teo. that it is not possible at this stage to forecast to any degree of accuracy the extent to which it may be necessary to import sugar in the coming year. The purchase of sugar is a commercial matter for the Sugar Company and is one in which I do not interfere.

I take it Comhlucht Siúicre will not be used to fight the Americans' battle in Cuba?
