Vol. 188 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waiting Restrictions in Dublin Streets.

26.

asked the Minister for Justice the purpose of enforcing a no waiting restriction on both sides of such streets as Pearse Street and Bachelor's Walk, which is harmful to the traders in these streets, and does not improve the flow of traffic because drivers still drive in a single lane only; and if he will take steps to have these restrictions removed.

I do not accept that the prohibition on parking on both sides of streets such as those mentioned does not improve the flow of traffic. Practical experience has shown, on the contrary, that it improves it very noticeably. The beneficial effect should become even more apparent in time as drivers become more accustomed to the idea of using an additional traffic lane.

I appreciate that parking restrictions are often not welcomed by nearby traders but that is a problem that exists in every major city and it is unfortunately unavoidable. The greater good of the greater number must prevail and in the long run it is in the interests of everybody, not excluding those who feel aggrieved in the initial stages, that effective steps should be taken to enable traffic to flow smoothly through the streets.
