Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Collection of Dublin Rates by Monthly Instalments.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has got any reports from the Dublin Corporation and Dublin County Council regarding his suggestion to them to collect rates by monthly instalments; and, if so, if he will indicate their reply.

Dublin Corporation have stated in reply to the circular letter which I issued to local authorities last January that it has been the Corporation's practice for a great many years to make provision which would enable ratepayers to arrange with rate collectors to pay their rates by instalments and there has been a tendency over the years for the number of ratepayers availing of these arrangements to increase. Dublin County Council have replied that they have adopted a scheme for the payment of rates by instalments for the current financial year.

Will the Minister state if it is necessary for each ratepayer to make a special application for the payment of rates by instalments or is it the general practice of the Council to allow it?

I am not quite sure but the fact that schemes may be adopted, as have been adopted by some Councils——

If the local authority could bring it to the notice of ratepayers that this scheme is available to them it might be of advantages.

If such a scheme is adopted by any Council I am sure there is no ratepayer who will not know about it through the publicity it will be given.
