Vol. 189 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Sluice Gates on Liffey.

32.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if in view of the pending termination of the barge service by Messrs. Guinness on the River Liffey he will request the authorities concerned to take steps to raise the level of water in the Liffey as it passes through Dublin City by the erection of sluice gates at Butt Bridge or otherwise.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether in view of the fact that Messrs. Guinness's barges will no longer be using the Liffey after 30th June, 1961, he will enquire into the possibility of erecting sluice gates to control the tidal flow of the River Liffey and thus improve the amenities of the River.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 32 and 33 together.

I do not think I could usefully make any request or enquiry in this matter as I understand that suggestions for stabilising the level of the lower reaches of the River Liffey have been made from time to time over a considerable period, and that for technical and other reasons it has not been regarded as a practical proposition. Whether the practical difficulties could be overcome would be a question for consideration by the authorities directly concerned, namely Dublin Port and Docks Board and Dublin Corporation.
