The latest year for which details of expenditure on roads from local resources are available is 1959/60. Following are the figures for that year, together with the mileage of main and county roads at 31st March, 1960 and the expenditure per mile from local resources on main and on county roads:—

Notes 1. The above figures for expenditure and mileage are based on returns furnished by local authorities.
2. Expenditure from local resources in addition to rates includes moneys raised by way of loan and local contributions for works financed under the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote. Separate figures for the expenditure out of rates are not available.
3. The figures of expenditure on main roads represent the net amounts after payment of the main road upkeep grant, under which 40% of approved expenditure by the Council on main road upkeep is recouped to them.
4. Minor improvement works are sometimes executed by County Councils out of upkeep funds. The cost of such works is included in the above figures.
