Vol. 190 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Population of Mayo.

4.

asked the Taoiseach if in view of the high rate of emigration which is persistently progressive he will direct the Statistics Office at once to issue even the approximate population figure for County Mayo as per the recent Census.

The answer is in the negative.

As stated in reply to a question addressed to me in this House on 22nd instant, it is hoped to publish the preliminary report of the 1961 Census of Population in August. This report will give the population by county.

To obviate any misunderstanding on this subject, I should like to state that the statistical evidence does not support the Deputy's imputation that the volume of emigration is increasing. In fact, the net outward passenger movement by sea and air has recently been showing a considerable reduction.
