Vol. 191 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Dáil Franchise.

33.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider the advisability of extending the franchise in Dáil elections to all persons over eighteen years of age.

An extension of the franchise to persons between 18 and 21 years of age would require an amendment of the Constitution.

A man is considered guilty before the law and can suffer for a capital offence at the age of 18. Why should he not be able to vote? A man of that age may be sent out to fight and die for his country and why cannot he vote?

There are also such people going to school.
