Vol. 191 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Refuse Destructors.

19.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the possible use of destructors in place of the present method of refuse collection and disposal has been investigated by his Department; and, if so, if he will state the findings regarding the cost and efficiency of such destructors and the likelihood of revenue from the collection and utilisation of valuable waste materials.

The various methods of refuse collection and disposal have been under review in my Department from time to time. I am satisfied that the methods at present in general use in this country are the most economical that can be employed having regard to the degree to which the controlled tipping method suits our existing conditions and to the high capital and operating costs of destructor, salvage and incineration units.
