Vol. 192 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - C.I.E. Diesel Electric Locomotives.

28.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether in the public interest an instruction has been issued by the management of C.I.E. ordering that the diesel electric locomotives purchased from America will in future be driven cab-forward only; and whether it is the intention of the company to make any further purchases of this type of locomotive.

I am informed by C.I.E. that, to dispose of any possible doubts about the safety of the diesel locomotives, they have decided to continue to operate them with the cab in the leading position. I am also informed that while the Board have taken no decisions about the purchase of further diesel locomotives, they are very satisfied with these American locomotives which are giving excellent and economic service.

Would the Minister say whether any decision has been made to purchase further locomotives of this kind?

No decision has been made to purchase any further diesel locomotives of this or any other kind.

Would the Minister arrange to have one of these locomotives permanently attached to the royal Presidential train so it will be available for all future visits to the outposts of our empire?
