Vol. 192 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Consumer Goods by Drapers.

65.

andMr. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the fact that dealers in drapery goods are also selling consumer goods at prices below the normal equitable level with resultant disorganisation to the economic set-up of business houses in the City of Dublin; and that such firms are extending their activities to other parts of the country; and if he will take steps to remedy this serious situation, if necessary by introducing legislation.

I am aware that both here and in other countries, traditional methods of retail distribution are changing and that classes of goods formerly handled largely or exclusively by certain sectors of the retail trade are now being dealt in by other branches of the trade. I am not satisfied that developments of this nature are necessarily undesirable or that I should be justified in introducing legislation to put a stop to them.
