Vol. 193 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coast Erosion.

73.

asked the Minister for Finance whether in view of the present dangerous position obtaining at Cahore, County Wexford owing to coastal erosion he will ensure that immediate steps will be taken to counter the erosion.

74.

andMr. P. O'Donnell asked the Minister for Finance if in view of the considerable damage done by coastal erosion to property in County Donegal, particularly in the Moville area, he will immediately introduce a scheme whereby grants will be made available to prevent a recurrence of such damage.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comharle, to take Questions 71, 73 and 74 together. The introduction of legislation regarding the general question of coast protection works is being considered.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that in the case of the River Row at Moville, there is no guarantee that when a family go to bed at night, they will not wake in the morning and find the sea at their back door? Is the Parliamentary Secretary further aware that the Minister for Local Government has given State grants to repair these homes which have been damaged owing to sea erosion but that in fact there is no guarantee that these houses will be completed, or will be fit to live in?

Legislation is under consideration.

How long must we wait for a decision?

I cannot anticipate the length of time it will take. As I have said, the matter is under examination at the present time.
