Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Malicious Injuries Awards.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give the total amount paid out by local authorities during the past 12 months by way of compensation and costs under the malicious injuries code, together with separate details of the amount claimed in cases outstanding and still awaiting adjudication during the same period.

The total amount paid by local authorities during the year ended 31st December, 1961, in respect of compensation for malicious injuries was £55,189.

Claims against local authorities awaiting adjudication at the end of 1961 totalled £621,643. This figure, however, is no indication of the probable pending liability of local authorities under this head as it includes duplicate claims made concurrently against two or more local authorities and claims which may not be proceeded with or which may be rejected by the courts.
