Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Quality of Irish Footwear.

50.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of complaints about the poor quality of Irish footwear due to the use of inferior materials in the manufacture of such footwear; and if he will take the necessary steps to ensure that manufacturers conform to proper standards.

I receive occasionally complaints from users about specific items of footwear made by Irish manufacturers and I have each such complaint investigated with the manufacturers. Since complaints have been very few, and having regard to the outcome of the investigations, and the fact that the Irish footwear industry is engaged in a substantial export trade, I cannot accept the general implication in the question that proper standards are not being adopted in the footwear industry.
