Vol. 194 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Employment of Ex-Army Men.

70.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs how many ex-Army men are at present employed in his Department, together with the year of appointment of each of these men.

I am sorry that the information sought by the Deputy is not available.

Could the Minister say if there is any preference given to ex-Army men?

There is, under certain well defined rules. Privileges are given for subordinate employment.

Could the Minister give any idea of the sort of preference?

There are certain competitions confined to ex-Army personnel. There are appointments as clerical officers, postmen, etc.

Have labouring men any preference?

There are various categories of ex-Army men employed in the Department, for example: those who were recruited by special competitions confined to ex-Army personnel e.g. competitions for appointments as Clerical Officer, Executive Officer and Postman; those who secured subordinate employment under the various schemes of preference for persons who rendered military service to the State; those who were released from the Post Office to serve in the Defence Forces in the 1939-1945 emergency period and who returned to their Civil Service posts at the end of the emergency; those who were recruited to the Post Office in the normal way and who had prior Army Service in respect of which they were not entitled to or did not get preference. In so far as ordinary subordinate employment is concerned, I have not got the precise details of the regulation.

Would the Minister try to ensure that the preference stated by him is given to them?

What I have stated here is being given.

I think it is about the only Department which gives any preference.
