Vol. 194 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick City Housing.

47.

asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the total number of applicants for new houses in Limerick City; and (b) what proposals have reached his Department to meet this housing need.

I am informed that there are at present 1,175 applicants for rehousing listed by Limerick Corporation.

Proposals for the provision of further dwellings by the Corporation, submitted to my Department, include 39 dwellings at Garryowen/Pennywell Link, 11 at Prospect Hill and 155 at Greenhills/Tankfield and work is in progress on these three schemes. I have approved plans for two further schemes of 86 dwellings at St. John's (Garryowen) and 4 dwellings at Rutland Street. Plans are under examination for 295 dwellings at Roxboro Road (Galvone) and my Department is in correspondence with the Corporation about a scheme for six dwellings at Clancy Strand.

A Compulsory Purchase Order to enable the acquisition of land at Watergate for 213 dwellings has been confirmed. In addition, the acquisition of 83 acres at Rathbane for purposes which include housing has been approved and another Compulsory Purchase Order for the acquisition of approximately 70 acres in this area is under consideration.
