Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospitals Trust Commission and Voluntary Hospitals.

7.

asked the Minister for Health the personnel of the Hospitals Trust Commission; the number of voluntary hospitals in the State; and the amount paid to each voluntary hospital during the past ten years.

There are two statutory bodies concerned in connection with matters arising from the administration of the Hospitals Trust Fund. These are the Hospitals Commission and the Hospitals Trust Board. I am not clear as to which of these bodies the Deputy has in mind when he refers to the "Hospitals Trust Commission". I propose, therefore, to furnish the information requested by the Deputy in respect of both the Hospitals Commission and the Hospitals Trust Board.

The members of the Hospitals Commission are:—Michael W. Doran, B.E., M.I.C.E. (Chairman); John McCann; John J. McWeeney; Patrick Cogan; Michael Kilroy; and John P. Shanley, M.D.

The members of the Hospitals Trust Board are:— Francis Dancy; Denis Guiney; Percy McGrath; James Troy; and John P. Reihill.

In his reference to voluntary hospitals, I presume the Deputy has in mind institutions which are owned and managed by religious congregations or other benevolent bodies and which provide accommodation and treatment in public wards under the care of medical staff appointed by the hospital but excluding institutions for the care of the mentally ill and mentally retarded, dental hospitals, convalescent homes and homes for aged and infirm, deaf, dumb and blind, and unmarried mothers and their children.

On that definition the number of voluntary hospitals is 54.

The particulars in regard to payment from the Hospitals Trust Fund to such hospitals is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

GRANTS paid from the Hospitals Trust Fund to Voluntary Hospitals in the period of ten years ended 31st March, 1961.
