Vol. 194 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clontarf Graveyard Extension

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if Dublin Corporation made any proposals to him for the extension of Clontarf graveyard before he arrived at his decision in respect of building proposals at Clontarf Castle estate.

The answer is "No".

Is the Minister aware that on 29th December, 1959, Dublin Corporation gave public notice in the Press of its intention to invoke the Clontarf Cemetery (Land Acquisition) Order, 1959, for the purpose of acquiring the nursery adjoining the cemetery so as to extend the cemetery, land on which the Minister has since sanctioned building proposals?

The answer to the question is still "No."

In view of the lack of liaison between the Minister's Department and the Dublin Corporation in this matter, will the Minister say if he will now review his decision to permit building on these lands so as to permit the Corporation to proceed with its original plans to extend the cemetery?

I would suggest that liaison might be better employed between those who now seem to be so concerned about this matter and their own Corporation and, furthermore, to seek the way in which they can still attain the end the Deputy seems so concerned about, because it still is not impossible for the extension of which so much talk has been made to be carried out.

Does that mean that the Minister will agree to the extension?

The Minister does not revoke anything he has done, but I say it is not impossible to do what was intended to be done, if those who are making so much noise about it would bend their energies in the right direction.
