asked the Minister for Health if he will state in respect of each health authority area (a) the total population, (b) the number of persons on the medical register (including dependants), (c) the expenditure on general medical services (excluding salaries and wages), (d) the number of medical staff employed and the expenditure on salaries, (e) the number of nursing staff employed and the expenditure on salaries, and (f) the number of administrative and lay staff employed and the expenditure on salaries and wages.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Health Services Statistics.
I presume that the information requested by the Deputy in all the parts of his question is in respect of general medical services and I am replying on that basis.
I am not in a position to supply the information regarding administrative and lay staff requested at (f) of the question. Such staff are not normally engaged exclusively on duties in connection with general medical services but carry out various functions in connection with the health services generally and in some instances on other aspects of local government services.
As the reply to the remaining parts of the question is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.
Following is the statement:—

The nursing staff referred to in column (e) of the reply carry out duties in respect of other services such as school health examinations and maternity and child health services, in addition to duties in connection with the general medical services. It is not possible accurately to apportion the nurses' salaries as between general medical services work and other work, as the proportion of time spent on each varies from time to time as between different officers and different areas.
The voluntary agencies referred to in column (e) whose nurses carry out district duties are subsidised by the health authorities to the extent of about £30,000 per annum.
