No urgent repairs were requested for Portlaoise Garda station, but a contract for entire painting and minor repairs has recently been completed at a cost of about £800, and arrangements are in hands for improvements estimated to cost about £1,000. The station was last inspected in June, 1962.

Works carried out to the residence since last September cost slightly over £500. All have been certified complete except a new wall and gate which are practically complete. No further repairs or decoration are necessary at the moment and any necessary provision for future repairs will be made in the Estimates for the relevant year.
Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that when the sergeant went into occupation of his quarters, they were in a state of complete ruin, decay and collapse? It was not right that they should have been allowed to fall into such disrepair.
That is not so.
It is not so now since the repairs were carried out.
And it was not so then.
I was in the living quarters. I saw them myself. They were in a state of complete ruin.

A definitive decision to erect a new Garda station at Ballacolla, County Laois, was conveyed to the Commissioners of Public Works in February 1962. A search is proceeding for a site. An estimate of the cost of building the new station has not yet been prepared and I am not at this stage in a position to say how soon the work will commence.

The former Garda station at Ballickmoyler was a rented building the tenancy of which was terminated by the owner. A site for a new station has just been acquired, but at this stage I am unable to say when the erection of the building will commence.

The cost of erecting the new Garda station, including married quarters, at Banagher, will be about £4,900. It is expected that the work will be completed by the middle of 1963.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is satisfied that the Garda station at Ballybrittas, County Laois, is in a satisfactory state of repair; and if he will obtain a report on it with a view to providing money for general repairs, improvements and exterior decorations.
The building is structurally sound, and a contract has recently been placed for external decoration and minor repairs. By reason of its age and inherent defects the building cannot be regarded as or made suitable for permanent use, and it has been recommended to the Department of Justice that the single men be permitted to live out, and that the station be listed for replacement in a reasonable time.
I am very pleased to hear that.
