Vol. 196 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois and Offaly Post Offices.

106.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount spent on the repairs, decoration and extension of the post office at Portlaoise for each of the years since 1957; if the entire building has been inspected with a view to further repairs; if so, the date of such inspection; and what repairs are about to be carried out on this building in the future.

The amount spent on repairs, etc., at Portlaoise Post Office for each of the financial years 1957/58 to 1961/62 is as follows:

£

1957-58

360

1958-59

850

1959-60

990

1960-61

12,150

1961-62

3,800

The building was inspected earlier this month in connection with a scheme for re-decoration and the repair of floors, plasterwork, and other minor repairs, which is at present being carried out. Further maintenance work will be carried out in the future as and when required.

A very favourable reply.

asked the Minister for Finance the nature of the improvements, extension and decoration proposed for the post office at Tullamore, County Offaly; the date on which this work was last inspected; the amount estimated for the carrying out of this work; and the amount of public money spent for each of the years since 1957.

The works at present proposed for Tullamore Post Office are the provision of new flooring in the sorting office and rebuilding of the boundary wall. The estimates of cost are £375 and £250 respectively. The building was last inspected in May, 1962.

Expenditure on improvements and repairs was approximately as follows: 1957-58, £20; 1958-59, £150; 1959-60, £60; 1960-61, £2,940; 1961-62, £500.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say if his Department have any arrangements for extending the sorting accommodation in Tullamore? I understand the office there is very crammed.

Not as yet. The matter is under consideration.
