Vol. 196 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government Information Bureau.

2.

asked the Taoiseach what are the exact functions and duties of the Government Information Bureau; and what are the various types of work done by the Bureau.

The function of the Government Information Bureau is to make available, for publication, information regarding the activities of Ministers and Government Departments and the national policy underlying those activities.

In carrying out this function the Bureau issues statements to the Press and Radio Éireann, supplies information, White Papers etc. to journalists and newscasters, interviews local and foreign journalists and arranges Press conferences and Press, Radio, Television and Film coverage of important official events. It also provides a press-cutting service for Government Departments, issues a daily news summary for Departmental circulation and maintains an index of local news.

3.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons employed in the Government Information Bureau, and the total cost of the Bureau to the Exchequer in each of the years 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1961.

I propose, with your permission, Sir, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the number of persons employed in the Government Information Bureau in each of the years 1958 to 1961, inclusive, and their total remuneration.

It would not be readily practicable to apportion to the Bureau its share of the expenditure on incidental expenses, messenger and cleaning services and allied services attributable to the Vote for the Department of the Taoiseach as a whole.

Following is the statement:—
