Vol. 197 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Expenditure on Education.

123.

asked the Minister for Education the amount of State expenditure on education which is paid for (a) a person leaving primary school at the age of 14 years, (b) a person leaving secondary school at the age of 18 years, and (c) a person leaving university at the age of 22-24 years.

In view of the fact that the number of years spent in attendance at primary schools, secondary schools and universities varies from student to student it is not possible to make an accurate estimate of the figures requested by the Deputy without undertaking a very large volume of statistical work, which would not be warranted.

However, it is calculated that during the year 1960/61 (the latest year for which complete figures are available) the State expenditure per pupil was £24-0-0 in National Schools, £36-10-0 in Secondary Schools and £96 in Universities.
