Vol. 198 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - American Industrial Concerns in Republic.

45.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total number of American industries or manufacturing concerns established in the Republic each year from 1957 to the most recent date available, and the total amount of capital involved each year.

Industries established in the State with US participation were one in 1957, one in 1958, five in 1959, five in 1960, three in 1961 and nil in 1962, aggregating 15.

I am not in a position to give information regarding capital employed.

Could the Minister say whether he considers the money spent by various Government envoys touting for business over the years was money well spent in the circumstances?

Though I do not accept the description applied by the Deputy to the activities of Government envoys in the United States, these various visits by civil servants and by one, at least, of my predecessors take time to bear fruit. Things do not happen overnight as a result of these visits.
