Vol. 199 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recovery of Hospital Charges.

13.

asked the Minister for Health the amounts recovered by health authorities in 1960-61 and 1961-62 in respect of hospital charges in the case of (a) insured persons and their dependants, (b) farmers with farms under £50 valuation and their dependants, and (c) others.

As was indicated in replies to previous questions by the Deputy, many persons who receive health services as members of one eligible class could also be correctly regarded as members of another eligible class. Many agricultural land holders are, for instance, also insured persons, and the majority of insured persons could also correctly claim services as persons whose means are less than £800 a year.

For these reasons no reliable apportionment can be made between the different eligible classes of the income from charges in respect of services provided under Section 15 of the Health Act, 1953, and Section 231A of the Mental Treatment Act, 1945. The total amounts of the income from patients receiving institutional services under these Sections in the years 1960-61 and 1961-62 were £466,000 and £488,000 respectively.
