Vol. 199 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment at Shannon Industrial Estate.

30.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the number of vacancies for (a) male adults, (b) female adults, (c) male juveniles, and (d) female juveniles which existed at the Shannon Free Airport Industrial Estate at the time during the Christmas holiday period when large numbers of advertisements were issued suggesting that emigrants should return to take up employment on the Estate; the number of vacancies for each such class of employee which were filled as a result of these advertisements during the period ended 31st January, 1963, and the average weekly rate of wages offered to each class.

I am informed by the Shannon Free Airport Development Company that the publicity campaign to which the question refers was designed to provide information to persons interested in the employment prospects at the Industrial Estate. Approximately 500 vacancies existed or were expected to arise during 1963. During the month of January, 96 additional persons—16 males and 80 females—obtained employment in the Estate but I could not say to what extent these persons were employed as a result of the advertisement. The opportunities for male employment in the Estate are expected to increase progressively during the year. At 31st January a total of 766 males and 680 females were employed.

About 500 persons called to the information centres during the campaign and the applications have been classified and passed to the factory managements. The specific information sought by the Deputy in regard to the kinds of vacancies and wage rates relates to the private affairs of the individual firms and it is not the practice to disclose such information.
