Vol. 199 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Register of Unemployed Workers.

58.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will take steps to compile a register of persons who are unemployed and of persons compelled to emigrate through unemployment, so that they may be directed or recalled to areas where employment opportunities are provided through the setting-up of new industries.

A register of persons seeking employment is maintained by my Department and statistics from the register are published each week through the Central Statistics Office.

I do not consider that an extension of the system on the lines indicated in the question would be feasible.

Does the Minister not consider that those who have had to emigrate through no fault of their own are placed at a disadvantage when employment offers in particular areas? I have in mind the Kilmore Quay Scheme in Wexford, from which area there has been a vast amount of emigration. Is it not possible to compile a register to give emigrants an opportunity of getting employment?

No, I do not think it is possible.

Does the Minister not agree that those who have had to emigrate are at a great disadvantage vis-à-vis those who stay at home and who are drawing aid from the Minister's Department?

A person on the spot is obviously at an advantage in getting employment that arises locally.

If the Minister will not do anything about it, there is nobody else who can. Therefore will he not give the matter consideration?

Would the Minister not make a contribution towards fares?
